Call for Papers

Submissions are invited for the following three sections of Voluntary Sector Review:-

  • Research articles (7,000-8,000 words): These may cover research and analysis of any part of the voluntary sector – or the third sector and civil society more generally. Articles may include scholarly inquiry, research findings, and applied analysis of relevance to practitioners and decision-makers.
  • Practice papers (2,000-3,500 words): Short contributions from practitioners commenting on governance, management, fundraising or operational issues, including case-studies or examples of change and development within their own organisations, lessons learned, and wider practice implications.
  • Policy reviews (2,000-3,500 words): Short commentaries on recent changes or new initiatives within the voluntary sector policy environment in the UK or elsewhere. These reviews aim to inform readers about important and topical policy developments, including formal government initiatives or ideas from think tanks, research organisations or voluntary sector agencies. The reviews should set out the context and purposes of the policy, describe its content – making reference to key documents or legislation – and comment on its significance for the voluntary sector. Where appropriate, reviews should include examples or case studies, and draw briefly on any relevant research, or on voluntary sector or other literature.

In all three sections, contributions with an international scope are especially welcome, particularly where comparisons illuminate the UK experience. Proposals for themed sections, comprising a set of related articles, are also welcome; contact the editor for further information on how to submit a proposal.

All submissions are subject to rigorous blind peer review. The Editorial Team aims to provide quick decisions and to ensure that submission to publication takes the minimum possible time. Instructions for authors are available here.

The journal uses Editorial Manager (EM), an online article submission and editorial system. To submit a paper, please go to the VSR EM homepage. Book reviews (500-800 words) and review articles (2,000-3,500 words) are commissioned by the Book Review Editor.
