The global recession has shaken the confidence of and prospects for the UK voluntary and community sector. Although the sector has benefited from a long period of sustained investment matched by public and political support, the ability of organisations to plan for and adjust to the
new economic reality is still hampered by a limited evidence base. Looking forward, managing relationships with government in a period of substantive public expenditure cuts is likely to be the biggest test of the sector’s ability to survive, and even thrive, in a recession.
