The academic and practitioner literature pays little attention to the distinctive issues of governance found in small voluntary organisations. There are three key factors in developing more effective boards – board assessment, governance development and the relationship between
the senior staff member and the members of the board. Board effectiveness is also constrained by regulation – by the Charity Commission, Companies House and wider legislation. More evidence is needed to enable small organisations to address these challenges.
