Research interests

Further to completion of my PhD titled 'Public service reform, the labour process and changes in labour management in the voluntary sector' in 2013 I have been conducting further research based on my PhD findings, which examines the impact on and responses of voluntary sector organisations to financial crisis and austerity since 2008 . The research examines change in managerial practice and relations with employees and the role of voluntary organisations in public service delivery from 2008. The research includes repeat interviews with key informants from PhD research conducted in 2004-5 and critically examines responses to welfare reform in the voluntary sector since 2008 and the development of community organising, unionism and activism.

Other voluntary sector involvement

I was employed prior to becoming a Lecturer in a number of housing associations and campaign organisations. I have also acted as a board member/trustee for various organisations, such as Housing 21, a specialist provider of housing for older people, Arts Care Gofal Celf, an arts organisation engaged in socially inclusive arts projects, and York Citizen’s Advice Bureau (CAB).
