Research interests

Linda's recent research has concentrated on changing cross-sector relationships, survival, autonomy and resistances among civil society organisations, and the diverse experiences of larger and smaller organisations. A particular focus has been critical assessment of the effects of the changing political and policy environment on civil society organisations delivering welfare services. Drawing on a range of studies, she has published: Voluntary Sector in Transition: Hard Times or New Opportunities (2013, Policy Press); and recently a co-edited book with Ursula Murray: A Gilded Web: Civil Society Organisations in Turbulent Times (2017, UCL/IoE Press).

Other voluntary sector involvement

Over some 8 years, she co-ordinated postgraduate programmes in Voluntary, Community and Youth Studies in the School of Social Sciences, Birkbeck, University of London, where she was also Head of Social Policy and Education department. She has recently retired but continues to undertake research and writing. Linda has some 30 years involvement in the public and voluntary sectors as a teacher, researcher, manager, activist and trustee.
