Traumatised Web site in (partial?) recoveryVSSN's web site appeared today to be up and running again (more) fully after a saga of technical problems outside our control. After some weeks of failing to provide the usual normal updates to members and others, our Web site has today been updated to include a range of backdated changes going back to late August. We apologise to visitors for this gap and hope that normal service has now, or will soon be, resumed. Nick Plant, VSSN's Web Officer, explained, "We have been experiencing a series of server-side problems associated with a technical problem of some kind at our Internet Service Provider, the company that hosts the web site. For reasons that neither we nor they have quite understood yet, our menu has kept getting corrupted, and sometimes the site has lost its usual presentational style. "Worse still, the problems have meant that Veronique Jochum and I as your web team have -to our intense frustration- not been able to do our usual regular (ish) updates. Very sorry everyone, but let's hope the problems are now resolved. And if they're not, we promise to do everything we can to get them fixed, including maybe moving provider. This will be easier to contemplate once we have a clearer view of the changes to our technical infrastructure already in the pipeline...." ...but please don't hold your breath! UPDATE 3/11/08: I was right not being convinced: the updates prepared by Veronique, with a little help from me, seem to have gone live but once again the server has gone AWOL leaving our menu incomplete. This is the same problem -entirely outside our control- that dates back to the summer. Apologies again - I am now going to take this up more formally with our web hosting company... |
