Description of course |
Students develop and undertake their individual proposals for research
programmes leading to MPhil and PhD, working with a supervisory team of
specialist and experienced tutors. Programmes can be undertaken
full-time or part-time. Current individual programmes in the voluntary
sector studies area include studies, for example: volunteering and
community self-help in Kenya; history of ideals of service and voluntary
action in India; management of a faith-based organisation in England;
NGO-government collaboration in poverty alleviation in Bangladesh;
public-private partnerships and community involvement in Nigeria. These
are located in the School of Social Sciences, Media and Cultural
Studies, and other colleagues in this School support MPhil/PhD
programmes in international development, social work and social policy,
as well as studies based in anthropology, politics and cultural studies.
Prospective students are advised to informally contact by email a tutor
– as Mike Locke or Jon Griffith – with a brief note of their topic and
interest. Formal application is by application and an outline of
approximately 1,000 words. During the first six months, students prepare
a proposal for their programme to submit to School research degrees
committee. |
