Description of course  This programme, available from 2009/2010 onwards on a full time and part time basis, is available to graduates with a 2.1 or higher university degree (GPA equivalent 3.25) in a social science discipline. (Applicants must have excellent command of English.) The course provides students with an advanced understanding of current debates, theories and concepts relevant to both international social policy and organised civil society, where the latter includes the 'third sector' situated between the market and the state.

Students learn about both the common features of social policy arrangements internationally, and the diversity and difference that characterises welfare in different countries. Students became familiar with the evidence and argument used to defend and contest existing arrangements and reform proposals, in relation to organised civil society; and are equipped to think critically about the development of social welfare systems in a global age, attending carefully to the evolving welfare mix including the state, the market and the third sector.

Core modules include organised civil society and the third sector; international social policy; design philosophy and ethics of social enquiry; and a research dissertation. Optional modules include key issues in comparative social policy; using qualitative and secondary data; quantitative analysis; and techniques of data analysis ; social and political movements, environmental politics, gender and family in a global society; human rights in a world of states; international migration issues and perspectives; urban sociology; making and implementing health policies; and terrorism and modern society.
